Preparation for the Unthinkable

Organizations can no longer take security for granted. Employers have had to confront the reality that the duty to provide a safe workplace may extend beyond ensuring that walkways are clear, exits are marked, and safety equipment is used properly. It may include – indeed should include – planning for the unthinkable: a major emergency such as natural disaster or terrorist attack. Preparations require a comprehensive Emergency Response plan, that takes into consideration shelter-in-place, evacuation, containment, communications with response authorities, and periodic exercise of the plan.
